Why vigilance is crucial
Even a finishing job can involve risks: falls, handling gypsum board and exposure to crystalline silica during sanding. Since June 2023, the CNESST has applied a specific subsection (3.25) of the Safety Code to regulate such work.
Your unavoidable obligations
- Worksite prevention program: mandatory when there are at least 10 workers on site.
- Record of silica-generating work: location, duration, control method and dust collection results.
- CCQ project notice: must be sent before work begins, with a breakdown of hours by trade.
- Height-rescue plan: required for any elevating platform or scaffolding exceeding 3 m.
Control measures to be implemented
- Use tools with high-efficiency local exhaust (≥ 25 cfm / cm disc) and HEPA filters.
- Annual fit-test of N95 masks or P100 half-masks for each exposed worker.
- Practical training in the safe handling of 4×12 gypsum board and the use of lifting devices.
- 10-minute safety meeting at the start of the shift, digitally recorded and accompanied by an internal recognition program.
Trends to watch out for between now and 2026
- Silica exposure value likely to be lowered to 0.025 mg/m³ (currently 0.05).
